Entries open for Newport Show
One of the Midlands’ leading one-day shows is inviting entries for this year’s event. The annual Newport Show at the Chetwynd Deer Park, which has a reputation for attracting some of the top livestock and horses in the region, has published its schedules for the show on July 14 at www.newportshow.co.uk/exhibitors.
There are 120 cattle and sheep classes with categories for native and continental dairy and beef cattle and the chance to win coveted titles such as Supreme Interbreed Champion.
New classes have been added this year for commercial beef cattle, which will be judged and scored by an expert panel, and for Shropshire and Suffolk sheep and butcher’s lambs.
The equine section, which includes 75 showing and pony club classes, is expected to attract tough competition after the winner of last year’s Shire Horse class went on to scoop a national title.
Woodhouse Miss Dynamite, bred by Martin Fountain, went on to win the Shire Horse of the Year Championship at one of the world’s most famous annual equine events, the 2017 Horse of the Year show.
The deadline for entries is June 22 for livestock and June 29 for the horse show. Schedules can be viewed and downloaded at www.newportshow.co.uk/exhibitors.
Show President Tony Asson said: “Newport Show continues to attract some of the finest livestock and horses in the region and is viewed as an important event for competitors to win at.
“We have excellent facilities for unloading and preparation, competitive prize money and, as a one day event, there’s an exemption from pre movement testing for TB.
“All of that, combined with a vast range of other entertainment, makes it a great day out for farmers and horse owners.”
The show began as purely agricultural event more than 100 years and has expanded to include a festival of food, main ring and family entertainment, crafts, and other attractions.
This year, the show’s Education Hub is being enlarged to further expand its activities linking the journey from farm to fork.
Tony added: “The show still has a strong agricultural focus and remains an important date in the rural calendar. As the event has grown, we’ve committed to promoting the role that agriculture plays in the food that ends up on our plates and our expanded Education Hub will be looking at fun and innovative ways to get people of all ages learning more about food production.”
The show includes a Festival of Food with star guest the Great British Bake Off runner up Steven Carter-Bailey, an open dog show with Crufts qualifying classes, main ring entertainment, Education Hub, live music, countryside retail village, family entertainment, vintage vehicle and machinery displays, trade stands, handicraft and horticulture competitions, and a fairground.
Advance tickets are already on sale at www.newportshow.co.uk and membership packages offering additional privileges are available.
