Telford care home unveils new dementia unit
A care provider has introduced a new residential unit for people with dementia to address the increasing demand for specialist bed places in Shropshire.
Barclay Gardens in Donnington, Telford, which is run by Coverage Care, has converted one of its four 10-bed residential units into a complex suitable for people who have Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia.
The home, which is rated good by industry watchdog the Care Quality Commission, now offers 30 beds for people with dementia and 10 for people requiring residential care.
Manager Debbie Ellis said the unit had been adapted to meet the needs of people with dementia and is welcoming its first residents.
“We have refurbished the unit to ensure it is secure and caters specifically for residents with dementia. Staff have also undergone additional training so we can provide a high standard of care for the residents.
“Our last CQC inspection rated us as good at providing a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led service. Our aim is to offer a home from home environment that seamlessly supports the physical and mental well-being of our residents while helping them to live as independent a life as possible.”
Facilities at Barclay Gardens include an on-site restaurant, which has been recognised with a Gold Healthy Eating Award, hair salon and day centre.
Coverage Care is Shropshire’s leading independent care home provider, run on a not-for-profit basis and has homes in Telford, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Newport, Bridgnorth and Bishop’s Castle.
Operations Director Debbie Price said the move at Barclay Gardens reflected the trend being experienced nationwide.
“As people are living longer, dementia is affecting more people. But they are tending to stay at home for longer with domiciliary support so those moving into residential care are more likely to have dementia.
“Referrals to us for residential dementia care are on the rise and, as illustrated by our response at Barclay Gardens, we are constantly reviewing our services to ensure we can meet the demand.”
